When I send out surveys to existing students asking about challenges or questions, I always find the broad range of responses that come in so fascinating.

Specifically, I look at the words that students use to describe the problems they are still experiencing.

Here are some examples from the past 6 months:

  • Using the mind in an inappropriate fashion resulting in poor decision making, strain on our relationships and existential angst
  • Because of the destructive ways that we habitually use our minds, we miss opportunities that are right in front of us
  • Many of us are unfulfilled in our own lives, this limits our giving. We can’t give what we don’t have. The quicker we can free ourselves from the prisons built in our mind, the quicker we can experience more peace, love and fulfillment and the more fully we can contribute to the rest of the collective consciousness of the planet

After writing this initial list, I decided to create a course addressing the idea of not being a slave to our own mind...

...essentially answering the question "What is within my power to break free from these self-imposed chains?"

One thing I've recognized with certainty, over the past 12+ years of practicing and teaching meditation, is the profound impact that comes from establishing a truly peaceful mind and doing real "inner work".

It changes everything.

Just like Lao Tzu said thousands of years ago, "If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place."

The problem is that just teaching meditation practice doesn't always serve everyone.

Some people still walk away with the same questions. Some having tried and believing they failed, never try again.

This simply won't do.

There are answers and there is relief from this pain that we all, at one point or another, feel.

The thing is, the solution doesn't fit within the usual paradigm of most "personal development" programs.

In fact, the answer is kind of like walking up to someone who believes the earth is flat and telling them it's actually round....likely to be met with resistance.

The truth is you can't have it both ways—you can't hold on to your current way of looking at things and see the solution to the problem.

Einstein said it well: "A problem can't be solved at the same level it was created."

And so it is with many self-improvement books and courses. They teach you clever ways to try and get around these problems while reinforcing the very problems they set out to solve!

After that, I had had enough. Something had to change.

There had to be a better way. And I was determined to find it!

This all resulted in ultimately realizing that I had been essentially wandering in darkness and building a better ego over those years.

It wasn't a white light experience but more of a gradual dissolving of the false ideas I had about myself and the world.

As these old ideas fell away, what took it's place was an understanding that can only be experienced directly.
